Zambo bans use of plastic bags

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Mayor Beng Climaco has urged shoppers and market goers here to use paper or buri bags instead of non-biodegradable plastics as she signed an order prohibiting the use of shopping bags made of polyethylene. Climaco also signed Executive Order BC453-2019 banning the use of non-biodegradable plastic bags during weekends as part of the local government’s ecological solid waste management program. The order enjoins all business establishments, markets and residents not tom use plastic bags. She said most plastic bags are considered as non-biodegradable being made of polymer substance known as polyethylene that cannot easily be decomposed by microorganisms and shall remain as environmental pollutant, thus posing health risk. According to Climaco, data on waste characterization showed that non-biodegradable waste accounts for 40% of the total garbage disposed and 17% of this constitutes plastics. KIDAPAWAN CITY - Tuluyan ng binawian ng buhay ang isang school head matapos na pagbabarilin ay tinangayan pa ng motorsiklo ng di-pa nakilalang mga salarin sa bahagi ng Barangay Bulit sa bayan ng Datu Montawal sa lalawigan ng Maguindanao. Kinilala ng Datu Montawal PNP ang biktima na si Emmanuel Gonzales at nakatira sa Poblacion sa bayan ng Pikit, North Cotabato. Troops kill insurgent in new fighting in South

PAGADIAN CITY – A communist insurgent was killed in a firefight Monday with government troops in the southern Filipino province of Misamis Occidental, officials said.   Capt. Clint Antipala, a spokesman for the 1 st  Infantry Division, said the fighting erupted in the village of San Pedro in Aloran town after patrolling soldiers caught up with a band of New People’s Army rebels.     A military photo released to the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner show the recovered AK-47 assault rifle following a firefight between troops and NPA rebels in Misamis Occidental's Aloran town on Monday, February 18, 2019 that left one gunman dead. Abu Sayyaf militant captured in Sabah

ZAMBOANGA CITY – An Abu Sayyaf militant, who fled the Philippines in March last year, has been arrested in Sabah where he was working as a construction man, Malaysian media reported Friday. Quoting an official police report, Malay Mail said the 21-year old militant, whose identity was not made public by security officials, illegally entered Malaysia in 2018 and is highly skilled in handling firearms. The Filipino is believed to be a follower of Puruji Indama, whose notorious group, is operating in Basilan, just 30 minutes by boat from the southern port city of Zamboanga. “The department also scored another hit when they arrested a Filipino man who is a member of the notorious Abu Sayyaf Group, known for its kidnapping-for-ransom cases in southern Philippines and Sabah.” “The suspect aged 21 had illegally entered Malaysia in March 2018 and have been working at a construction site. Security forces raid illegal gun shop in Maguindanao

COTABATO CITY – Policemen, backed by army soldiers, raided early Friday an illegal gun shop supplying weapons to pro-ISIS groups and criminal gangs in the town of Buluan in Maguindanao, one of 5 provinces under the Muslim autonomous region, officials said. Officials said security forces arrested a 60-year old gunsmith Abusama Abpun and seized four assorted rifles, including six Tommy guns and a tripod for .50-caliber heavy machine gun and several unassembled firearms.   Military photos released to the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner show security forces following a raid January 15, 2019 on an illegal gun shop in Maguindanao province. NPA frees 6 militias, but kills 2 soldiers in patrol base raid in South

DAVAO CITY – Communist insurgents freed six out of over a dozen soldiers and militias they captured in southern Philippines and at the same time raided a military post and killing 2 soldiers and wounding another in the restive region. Army Lt. Col. Ezra Balagtey, a spokesman for the Eastern Mindanao Command, said rebels released militias Jurian Gaviola, Marson and Hermito Iligan, Bienvinido Lamion, Eddie Tindoy and Sanny Malobay in Agusan del Norte’s Bayugan City late Thursday. But seven other militias and two soldiers remain captive in the province. The hostages were seized by rebels in December last year following a firefight in Sibagat town, according to Balagtey. Sayyafs kill soldier, 3 more wounded in Philippine clash

SULU – Abu Sayyaf militants killed a government soldier and wounded 3 more in a firefight Thursday in the southern Philippine town of Patikul. The fighting lasted over 20 minutes, but there was no immediate report of enemy casualties. At least 30 militants clashed with troops in Igasan village where security forces have been pursuing the pro-ISIS militants. The military’s Western Mindanao Command did not issue any press release on the latest fighting and had not given reports since the deadly twin suicide bombings on the cathedral in Jolo town on January 27. President Duterte ordered the military to destroy the Abu Sayyaf, whose leaders have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. Gunmen strafe cargo truck, kills 1 in Basilan

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Unidentified gunmen strafed a truck loaded with lumber and killed its driver while four others managed to flee from the attack in the troubled province of Basilan in southern Philippines. Police said the attack occurred late Wednesday afternoon in Macalang village in Al-Barka town and killed the 45-year old driver Roel Sanson. His companions fled from the truck on the first volley of gunfire and ran until they reached an army detachment and sought help. The victim and his group were engaged in lumber trading, according to the police, but the motive of the attack remains unknown. No individual or group claimed responsibility for the ambush which happened despite the expanded martial law in the restive region due to threats of rebellion and terrorism. ZAMBOANGA CITY – Undercover cops arrested a village chieftain of Tawi-Tawi province following a drug sting in Zamboanga City, officials said Wednesday. Zamboanga City Mayor Beng Climaco. He said members of the Drug Enforcement Unit also seized six packets of suspected shabu, one .45-caliber pistol and a magazine loaded with 15 ammunition, 25 bullets for 9mm pistol and two magazines for automatic rifle and 10 ammunition. “The arrested persons are now detained and all the confiscated items will be brought to Zamboanga City Crime Laboratory Office for examination,” Licup said. Army militia wounded in Maguindanao bomb blast

COTABATO CITY - One pro-government militia was wounded after an improvised explosive went off in Guindulungan town in the restive province of Maguindanao, the army said Wednesday. The 6 th Infantry Division said the blast occurred in the village called Macasampen while the militia was patrolling. The victim, who is working for the 38 th Infantry Battalion, was rushed to hospital. It said the explosive was planted near the highway where troops regularly pass. “The explosion was meant to inflict harm to our troops just in time they were passing to conduct their regular security in the area,” said Maj. MAGUINDANAO – President Rodrigo Duterte led the distribution of Certificate of Land Ownership Award (CLOA) to agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) in Buluan town in Maguindanao province. Security forces foil human smuggling off Zamboanga

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Security forces intercepted a boat trying to smuggle out over a dozen people illegally recruited from southern Philippines and promised jobs in neighboring Sabah in Malaysia, officials said Tuesday. Rear Admiral Rene Medina, chief of the naval forces in Western Mindanao, said ML Moneza was carrying 20 people when it was intercepted by navy vessels off Zamboanga City late Monday. Sayyaf linked to Sabah kidnappings slain in Tawi-Tawi

ZAMBOANGA CITY - An Abu Sayyaf militant linked to the spate of ransom kidnappings in Sabah in Malaysia and Philippines was killed in a shootout with security forces at a checkpoint in the southern Filipino province of Tawi-Tawi, officials said Thursday. Officials said Shaifful Julaili engaged troops in a firefight while trying to flee the checkpoint in Lapid-Lapid village in the capital town of Bongao. There was no report of casualties on the side of security forces. "The Abu Sayyaf, Shaifful Jalaili, violently escaped the checkpoint and fired at government troops which prompted them to retaliate and killed him," said Rear Adminral Rene Medina, chief of the Naval Forces in Western Mindanao. He said the Jalaili was involved in the series of kidnapping activities in Sulu Sea, particularly in the boundaries of Tawi-Tawi and Sabah.
