Cruise ship runs aground in Sulu Sea
ZAMBOANGA CITY – A cruise ship ran aground in the Sulu Sea after hitting a coral bed some 15 nautical miles off Cagayancillo Island near Palawan province, the Maritime Bulletin reported Monday.
It said the MV Forever Lucky was on its way to Bataan province in Luzon for repairs when it hit the coral bed. There were no passengers and the ship, which came from General Santos City in Mindanao, had only 15 crew members. All were rescued following the accident which occurred January 7.
“Thankfully, the ship went into trouble without passengers on board,” the report said. “The ship was still aground, monitored for possible oil leak. Filipino salvage company was said to be contracted for salvage.”
It said the cruise ship – owned by Fahrenheit Company - was stopped last year by Philippine authorities in Bataan province from leaving for Micronesia for allegedly smuggling 139 Filipinos to illegally work in Guam.
Maritime Bulletin further said that the cruise ship is strictly for inland waters and is not seaworthy.
“Russian inner waters are still full of cruise ships of this type, but these ships are strictly and only inland waters ships, they are not seaworthy, though sometimes irresponsible owners and authorities allow them to take short sea coastal trips, in Black/Azov seas mostly. Fresh sea and wind will sink such ship in no time. It is absolutely irresponsible for Filipino authorities to allow such ship to navigate Filipino waters,” it said.
There was no immediate statement from the Philippine Coast Guard. (Mindanao Examiner)
